Racist violence in the GDR – the murder of Delfin Guerra and Raúl Garcia Paret in Merseburg

This podcast episode commemorates the killing of the two Cuban contract workers Delfin Guerra and Raúl Paret in 1979. In conversation with Cynthia Zimmermannfrom the ‘Initiative 12. August’ and the journalist and documentary filmmaker Julia Oelkers we reflect on racism in the GDR and the challenges of remembrance across long distances, both geographical and temporal.

About the event

On August 12, 1969, Delfin Guerra and Raúl Garcia Paret, two Cuban so-called contract workers, lose their lives in Merseburg. Fleeing from a racist hunt, the two Cubans jumped into the Saale, where they were pelted with stones and bottles. Their bodies were not found until days later. The crime was never consistently solved – neither by the GDR police and public prosecutor’s office following the instructions of the SED leadership at the time, nor by renewed investigations carried out by the prosecutor’s office in Halle.
