Four workshops in Rostock, Athens, Oslo and London also dealt with the practices of remembering and forgetting, with <em>Doing Memory<\/em> of, right-wing violence. <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Getting to know Doing Memory<\/em><\/h2>\n\n<p>Memory, right-wing violence and society. How they are connected and what <em>Doing Memory<\/em> actually means &#8211; an overview in the explanatory film:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Was ist Doing Memory?\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qJrifWkJlik?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most important terms at a glance<\/h3>\n\n<p><em>Doing Memory<\/em> as an approach that<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8211; includes remembering and forgetting as conflicting practices for creating meaning about the past<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8211; relates what is remembered to the present and the future<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8211; raises questions about the people who are Doing Memory, about their interests, about power, domination and their legitimation<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8211; demands a radical multiple perspective in order to be able to develop perspectives for a plural and democratic society<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8211; understands right-wing violence as an important phenomenon of contemporary society and makes its historical continuity visible by recognising the victims and those affected by it <\/p>\n\n<p>&#8211; calls for politics of listening as a starting point for social debate<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This project<\/h2>\n\n<p>In 2018, Tanja Thomas, Matthias N. Lorenz and Fabian Virchow began to expand their interdisciplinary research in the field of remembrance culture. They organised workshops first in Rostock, but later also in Athens, Oslo and London. Participants were not only academics from a wide range of disciplines, but also people who are involved as participants in the practices of <em>Doing Memory<\/em>: Those affected, contemporary witnesses, journalists, activists and artists from various fields. The research team was hoping that this would not only lead to the further development of scientific questions and discussions, but also to an exchange about different perspectives and experiences with a <em>Doing Memory<\/em> of right-wing violence in different cultural contexts.<\/p>\n\n<p>A film team accompanied the workshops. This resulted in interviews with the workshop participants. They reflect on the relationship between<em>Doing Memory<\/em>and democracy, share practices of remembering and record conflicts and visions.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Approach<\/h2>\n\n<p>This page presents results of the workshops and also tries to give an insight into the theories and scientific findings on remembrance practices and <em>Doing Memory<\/em>. The question of how literature functions as a venue for both distinction and conflict as well as exchange and integration underpins much of his work, which includes monographs on anti-Semitism in literature, artistic freedom in democracy and postcolonial intertextuality as well as the &#8220;Lexikon der &#8216;Vergangenheitsbew\u00e4ltigung&#8217; in Deutschland&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group absatz-aufklapp\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull absatz-aufklapp\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<details>\n    <summary style=\"outline: none;\"><strong>Birg\u00fcl Demirta\u015f<\/strong> studied Social Pedagogy\/Social Work and Empowerment Studies at the University of Applied Sciences in D\u00fcsseldorf and is a racism-critical education officer at IDA NRW. Her focus is on racism (criticism), right-wing and racist violence from the perspective of those affected and anti-Muslim racism.<p><\/p><\/summary>    \n<p>As witness of the Solingen fire attack she first conducted interviews with those affected ba racist violence in 2006, researched their experiences and documented them. Her qualifying publication \u201eDer Brandanschlag in Solingen und seine Wahrnehmung durch die zweite Generation von t\u00fcrkischst\u00e4mmigen Migranten\u201c was published in 2016 by the Landesintegrationsrat NRW. As research assistant within the Doing Memory project, she intesified her research, continuing to do so in 2018 at the research focus right-wing extremism and neonazism at the Hochschule D\u00fcsseldorf, focusing her work on the racis fire attack of Solingen as well as the pogrom of Rostock-Lichtenhagen. She also taught there in 2020. She taught topics like critical race theory and the perspective of those affected. She also made the marginalized voices of the affected from Solingen and Keupstra\u00dfe in Cologne audible and visible at public events in co-operation with Junges Schauspielhaus D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020 she is co-building the department Re_Struct at IDA-NRW.
